The dances of Saoco
Salsa Cubaine
A genre blending several rhythms (son, mambo, cha-cha-cha…). An improvised, free dance, most often with a partner (but also in line, in rueda or solo, suelta), where the pair traces successive circles. Above all a street dance, popular and social.
Timba
An energetic, festive evolution of casino, drawing its steps from rumba, reggaeton, Afro-Cuban and hip-hop. Often fast, it offers great freedom: the most festive expression of casino.
Rueda de Casino
Couple salsa, but danced with several couples in a circle: you chain figures as a group to the rhythm of the calls, for the joy of playing together.
Son
The ancestor of salsa, one of the most influential genres in Latin America. Traditional son has few moves, lots of travelling and tornillos (pivots on one foot); it's danced on the offbeat.
Rumba
Originally, the nighttime gatherings where people come together to sing and dance, carried by the chants and percussion. It has three forms: yambú, guaguancó and columbia.
Afro-cubain
Dances linked to the Afro-Cuban religion (santería), inherited from African slaves. Each Orisha, a deity sent to Earth like Yemayá (the sea) or Changó (thunder), has its dance, its music and its character.
Cha-cha-cha
Born with the musical genre of the same name, its signature is the chassé on the “four-and-one”: two slow steps then three quick steps.
Reggaeton
A genre born in the late 1990s in Puerto Rico and Panama, blending hip-hop, dancehall and salsa, but with a rhythm all its own.
